Keto Chocolate Smoothie
This Keto Chocolate Smoothie is the perfect meal if you’re following a high-fat, low-carb diet. Made with six ingredients it’s a wonderful keto breakfast on busy mornings.
How to Make a Smoothie
All you need to make this healthy smoothie recipe is coconut milk, protein powder, ground chia seeds, stevia, dark chocolate, and ice.
Healthy Chocolate Milkshake
My chocolate smoothie tastes like a classic chocolate milk shake, but it’s healthy and high-fat.
Top your Keto Chocolate Smoothie with unsweetened Whipped Cream to add extra fat, and make it even richer, creamier, and more delicious.

Are Smoothies Good for You?
If you’re wondering, are smoothies good for you, I’m here to help.
I love smoothie meal replacement when I’m on the go. Smoothies also work very well for my compromised digestion.
Gut Health and Smoothies
I was in my thirties when I was diagnosed with Celiac Disease, so maintaining gut health is an issue I deal with to this day. I can eat far more when the food is blended into a healthy smoothie.
For more information, see How I Healed My Gut.
Smoothie Cleanse
I haven’t ever done a smoothie cleanse. Have you? Recently my friend Steph told me about a green smoothie called the Alkagizer, but I haven’t tried it.
Alkagizer Green Smoothie Recipe
Wondering how to make an Alkagizer?
Simply blend a cup of coconut water, one-half lemon, an avocado, peeled cucumber, and five celery stalks in your Vitamix, then blend in a handful each of spinach, chard, parsley, cilantro, and arugula.
This looks like the perfect vegan smoothie!
Smoothies to Gain Weight
If you’re using smoothies to gain weight, the most important thing is to not load your smoothies with sugar. Instead of carbs, which turn right into fat, go for healthy macro-nutrients like protein and fat.
Today more than ever, the problem with gaining fat is that it is an incredible repository for toxins ranging from heavy metals to BPA, and more.
And if you’re trying to gain weight, you’ll want to use this body mass index calculator to make sure you stay in a generally healthy range –not too high or too low.
Best Milk for Keto
Anyway, back to healthy smoothies. And I have a quick question for you.
Do you make your smoothies with coconut milk, or prefer your smoothies with almond milk? I have a great guide, What’s the Best Milk for Keto? to help you decide what the best milk is for you.
Kitchen Scale and Keto
I’ve provided the measurements for this recipe in both volume and weight. If you own a scale and want to be very precise you can weigh your ingredients.
For those who don’t keep a scale in their kitchen, I’ve provided measurements in volume.
The ingredients for this Keto Chocolate Smoothie recipe can have equal measurements in volume, and yet yield different results when measured in weight. Why? Because some ingredients are denser and heavier than others.
Vitamix for the Perfect Smoothie
Here are a couple of additional notes to help you whip up this fantastic Keto Chocolate Smoothie recipe! First, use a high-powered blender like a Vitamix to make this, or you will not obtain the correct results.
Using a regular blender will yield an odd lumpy concoction, rather than a smooth and creamy shake or pudding.
Second, feel free to experiment with this recipe and try different types of protein powder and chocolate.
Smoothie Bowl
Although I haven’t tried it, all of my smoothie recipes would make a fantastic smoothie bowl to add your own granola and fruit.
Keto Smoothie Recipes
On a smoothie diet kick? Whether you’re having a smoothie for breakfast or a smoothie for dinner, my healthy smoothie recipes below will give you plenty of variety.

Keto Mint Chip Protein Shake
Another smoothie with coconut milk, we love this Keto Mint Chip Protein Shake for St. Paddy’s Day. Green smoothie recipes are the bomb, smoothies with kale, smoothies with spinach. I love them all!
Peanut Butter Smoothie
Craving a smoothie with peanut butter? My Peanut Butter Smoothie will not disappoint. It can also be made with almond butter for an almond butter smoothie.
Pumpkin Spice Smoothie
It doesn’t have to be fall to have a Pumpkin Spice Smoothie, this incredible treat can be enjoyed year-round.
Smoothies for Kids
I fed all of these protein shakes to my boys growing up and they are the perfect smoothies for kids.
Egg White Protein Powder
You’ll notice many of my healthy smoothie recipes above contain egg-white protein powder.
This ingredient is crucial to make the smoothie fluffy and to create the perfect texture. And if you are looking for a smoothie for energy, you’ll want this ingredient.

Gina says
Have you experimented with raw cacao powder instead of the chocolate?
Elana says
Gina, I haven’t tried that so not sure. If you experiment please let us know if it works :-)
Martha Burton says
I sure wish you’d use raw cacao powder instead of chocolate chunks. Cheaper and no sugar.
Elana says
Martha, feel free to adapt the recipe to your needs, just be sure to stop back by and let us know if it works!
Laura says
Elana,
I am loving the keto recipes. Thank you so much and I hope to see even more in the future. You are an inspiration to me. I’m going to try this tomorrow for breakfast.
Elana says
Thanks Laura!
Laura says
I’ve made the smoothie twice and I really like it. I used whole chia seeds and just blended a little longer. One thing I noticed is that I think the stevia may be triggering sugar cravings for me. I’m not sure if this is possible and will do more research. In my experience, having a breakfast with no sweet taste, even from stevia leaves me better equipped to say my sugar dragon during the day. I just be a more sensitive flower than most :-)
Trish says
I don’t have a vitamix, am I out of luck on this one?
Elana says
Trish, I don’t think it will be very smooth without the use of a high-powered blender, but feel free to experiment :-)
Trish says
Maybe I’ll just have to chew it, because it sounds Devine!
Barbie says
You are using 85% chocolate, what type of sugar is included in that chocolate? Have you considered 100% chocolate without sugar?
Elana says
Barbie, if you click the green text in the ingredients portion of the recipe you will be given that info. Feel free to experiment with 100% chocolate, just be sure to stop back by and let us know if it worked :-)
Shawn says
If I only have whole chia seeds, would I grind them in a coffee grinder first?
Elana says
Yes :-)
Bookworm says
I don’t have a coffee grinder, so I’m going to see how well a mortar and pestle work for this. Wish me luck!
Elana says
Good luck :-)
Terissa says
Do you rec the Vitamix over the Blendec ? I would like to invest in such a machine, but don’t know which is better – or better value. Anybody have any opinions ? Thanks !
Elana says
Terissa, I’ve had a Vitamix since 1999 and love it, I’ve hear that Blendtec is good too, but haven’t tried it :-)
Claudia Vogel says
I have free range chickens, from which we get 7-9 eggs a day could i use fresh egg whites in place of the egg white protein powder? If so, how much?
Elana says
Hi Claudia, I haven’t tried that so not sure. If you do experiment please let us know how it goes.
Carol Jones says
Carb count??
Elana says
Carol, for more on that please see this post:
https://elanaspantry.com/nutrition-information/
Have a great day!
Elana
Erin says
What is the purpose of the egg white powder?
Elana says
Hi Erin, the purpose of the egg-white protein powder is to add protein to the smoothie, and also to make it rich and frothy. Feel free to experiment with other protein powders and let us know if they work :-)
Karina says
Whey protein works.
