Diagnosed with Celiac Disease
I started creating healthy dessert recipes when I was diagnosed with celiac disease in 1998, during the Dark Ages of gluten free.
At that point, following a gluten free diet became critical.
Over the years, I’ve learned how important eating low carb is as well, given that celiac and diabetes ride on the same gene –having one increases the likelihood of having the other.
Easy Gluten Free Recipes
This is also why I started following a grain free diet, a couple of decades ago. Almond flour and coconut flour make up the base of my easy gluten free recipes. No corn, potato, or rice flour here!
Recipes with Almond Flour
After testing just about every gluten-free flour available, I can save you a lot of time and hassle when I say that almond flour is far superior to most other gluten free flours in terms of:
- Taste
- Ease of Use
- Nutrition
Easy Recipes for Gluten Free Desserts
And this crisp is another one of my easy recipes for gluten free desserts made with almond flour.
It also has even less added sweetener than the usual peach crisp, with only one tablespoon of maple syrup in the entire recipe.
Recipes for Healthy Desserts with Fruit
Yes, you can have your cake and eat it too! This is important when dessert is your favorite part of the meal and you don’t believe in deprivation.
That’s why I’ve created so many dessert recipes that are easy and healthy.

Apple Crisp Recipe Easy
When I create a recipe, saving time in the kitchen is essential, but preparing delicious and nutritious recipes for my family is just as important.
My Apple Blackberry Crisp can be assembled in 10 minutes!
It’s made with apples, blackberries, lemon juice, and vanilla, then finished off with a high protein almond flour crumble topping, sweetened with a touch of maple syrup.
The boys used to say, mom, would you make us a apple crisp recipe when they were little, and I would chuckle as they fumbled adorably for the proper article while making their request.
Now they’re all grown up and still ask for apple crisp when they come home to visit!
Looking for a sugar free tart apple dessert that is best served a-la-mode? Try my Granny Smith Apple Crisp made with granny smith apples, almond flour, ground cinnamon, and xylitol.
Recipe for Berry Crisp
Bursting with low carb fresh strawberries, my healthy sugar-free Strawberry Crisp is a great keto dessert.
This is a truly simple recipe made with 5 ingredients, where your oven does most of the work.
While baking the strawberries, use your food processor to pulse together the low carb, gluten free topping made with almond flour, slivered almonds, salt, and shortening or butter.
Recipes for Plum Jam
Luscious homemade jam is fruit at its finest. My Sugar Free Plum Jam Recipe cooks down the whole fruit with water, lemon juice, and stevia. Nothing more!
It’s full of fiber, loaded with a healthy dose of vitamin C, and bursting with tart flavor.
I love serving Sugar Free Plum Jam on top of toasted Keto Bread smothered in ghee.

I have made this many times — with plums and apricots, too. Always fantastic and guests always rave about it!
Elana says
Valerie, thanks so much for letting me know this is always fantastic!

Two of us on the Always Hungry diet tried this recipe. Taste was good. Even liked the crumb topping before cooking. However there was nothing in the recipe to hold the crisp together. Trying to take out pieces with a spatula resulted in peaches and crumbs all over the place. Peaches were unpeeled. Any thoughts on what could be added to the peaches to give the dish some coherence?
Elana says
Harry, thanks for your comment and so glad that you enjoyed this recipe. Crisps, crumbles, and slumps are different than pies, they are not meant to be sliced out of the pan and tend to fall apart as you described :-)
Heather says
Made this tonight with fresh peaches ( did not peel) and used coconut oil instead of butter. Cooling right now but it smells amazing!!! Ok I snuck a taste and WOW it is amazing!! <3 Thanks for sharing an amazing recipe!
Elana says
Heather, thanks for letting me know this dish is WOW amazing! We love it too :-)
Elizabeth says
This is delicious, Elena! I added some red plums and cherries for some additional color, and it worked out great. I also baked it in a 12-inch cast iron skillet, which made for a nice presentation and easy clean up. I found that adding a 1/4 tsp of almond extract to the filling also adds a nice, different flavor that could be a good alternative sometimes. I’m making this again today for a friend’s birthday. Thanks again for the recipe!
Elana says
Elizabeth, you’re welcome! So glad to hear you are enjoying this recipe :-)
Linda Grace says
Is the butter better used cold, cool, or melted?
Elana says
Linda, room temp or cool :-)
Tamara says
Can I use ghee instead of butter? Same amount?
Elana says
Tamara, I haven’t tried that so not sure :-)
Lynnvht says
I just tried with ghee butter…we will see ?
Nancy H. says
I have found I am sensitive to almonds. Do have a suggestion as s substitute for the almond flour? For this recipe but also in general? Thanks!
Elana says
Nancy, I haven’t tried that so not sure. I have a fantastic nut-free Strawberry Rhubarb Crisp in this book:

Karen says
I have read you can replace 2 cups almond flour with 1/2 cup coconut flour.
Dr. Chris Johnson says
half coconut flour and half tiger nut or arrowroot flours
Tracey Garrell says
Hi Elana,
If I make any fruit dessert, I like lots of fruit and decided to add a cup of blueberries as well as the 6 small, fresh peaches. Delicious! Another option was adding 1/4 cup walnuts on the side and eating the crisp for breakfast with hot tea. Very Tasty next day too. This will be my NEW “go to” fruity dessert. Thank you!
Elana says
Tracey, so glad to hear you are enjoying this recipe and that it is your new “go to” fruity dessert!
Stephanie says
Do you peel the peaches too?
Elana says
Stephanie, yes when I use fresh peaches I do :-)
bella bates says
Do you blanch them or just peel?
Elana says
Bella, just peel :-)
Natalie Harder says
I never peel fruit before I cook with it – time consuming and you lose fiber and some of the other nutritional benefits – so it seems like a waste to do so. My kids have never had apple pie or peach cobbler with peeled fruit.
Lydia says
What’s the nutitional value? I do keto and wanted to know

Michelle says
How many cups/ peaches do you use?
Elana says
Michelle, thanks for your comment! I haven’t measured it in cups, if you do I hope you’ll stop back by and let us know :-)
Rosemary says
I tried the Paleo Peach Crisp that appeared in the 8/7/17 “Woman’s World” Magazine for a diner party. Not one of us could eat it. The peaches tasted great but the topping came out a browned, lovely looking, powder with little or no taste and way too much topping. I thought maybe the recipe left out a liquid of some sort to make a batter, like water, almond milk, etc. I would not recommend until the recipe is retested and changed.
Elana says
Rosemary, thanks so much for your comment! The liquid/binder in this recipe consists of maple syrup and butter. The results you saw typically happen when a different type of flour is used in this recipe, and can also occur when almond flour is used, but not one of the brands I recommend. I hope you’ll try this fan favorite recipe again :-)
AJ says
You do call for Almond flower so I am confused?? Are you staying that the brand of almond flower you use is optimal as opposed to other brands of almond flower?
Elana says
AJ, thanks for your comment! Yes, that is exactly what I’m saying. For more on that please go here:

I made this recipe with added blueberries and it cooked down to perfect juiciness! The topping did turn golden brown, was the perfect sweetness for our family, and tasted delicious. Grandsons, age 8 and 10, loved it. Having fresh ingredients in season makes a big difference. I will look forward to serving this with different fruits through the fall. Thanks for this recipe. Peaceful hearts to us all.
Elana says
Linda, thanks for your sweet comment! So glad to hear your grandchildren loved this :-)
