My boys are big fans of this easy ketogenic recipe. I’ve been making it since they were little. The combination of strawberries with a zing of lime is totally amazing. Here’s the recipe so you can make your own!
Keto Strawberry Lime Smoothie

- 1 can full fat coconut milk
- 8 ounces frozen strawberries
- ¼ cup egg white protein powder

- 1 tablespoon lime juice, freshly squeezed
- 1 tablespoon sunflower lecithin powder
- ¼ teaspoon stevia
Instructions
- Place all ingredients in a vitamix and puree on high speed until smooth
- Serve
Equipment
I use MCT oil in my Keto Strawberry Lime Smoothie recipe because it can raise blood levels of ketones which are a fantastic clean burning source of fuel for the brain. Among other things, ketones can reduce brain inflammation and increase production of brain derived neurotropic factor (BDNF).
Sunflower lecithin is another ingredient that is key to brain health. Lecithin contains phosphatidylcholine, a phospholipid that helps digest and breakdown fat. Phospholipids help fat cross the barrier of the cell membrane in order to get into the cell. If you’re not into the biochemistry of lipid metabolism, I can tell you in short, that a Keto Diet works very well for me, but even better when I use special brain-boosting ingredients like MCT oil and sunflower lecithin.

Is there a substitution for the egg white protein powder? Collagen peptides perhaps?
Elana says
Stu, I haven’t tried that so not sure; feel free to experiment :-)

Thanks, Elana!
I received my first bottle of Bulletproof Brain Octane Oil today, so I was able to read the label more thoroughly. It states that they have chosen to use “non-BPA, recyclable HDPE bottles to reduce environmental impacts of padding, packing and shipping glass bottles.” I then did some research on the various plastics. I especially liked the information provided on the baby green thumb site. I have come to realize that this is one of the “safer”plastics. Like you, I feel that it’s a compromise I’m willing to make in order to use this oil, which is not available in glass. Also, thanks for the information about coconut oil!
Elana says
Christine, thanks for your comment! Making a choice that is good for our macro-environment (the planet) as well as our micro-environment (our bodies) has never been as tough as it is now! I’m so lucky to get to have this thoughtful discussion with people like you, and I’m so grateful we’re on this healing path together :-)

I clicked through on “MCT oil” in your recipe, and was brought to “Bulletproof Brain Octane Oil” on Amazon. I have been so careful to buy my oils in glass bottles, not plastic, in order to avoid ingesting BPA and other harmful chemicals, which are in plastics and can leach into the oils. The Bulletproof Brain Octane Oil comes in a plastic bottle, which I believe is BPA free, but there are other harmful chemicals, besides BPA, in plastic. Because I know you are very careful about what you put into your body, yet you had linked to this product, I decided to go ahead and order it; since I have been wanting to try it, and there appears to be nothing exactly like it available in glass bottles. Still, I would be interested to know your thoughts on this topic — Do the benefits of the oil, itself, outweigh the dangers of the chemicals leaching from the plastic? Thanks, Elana!
Elana says
Christine, thanks for your comment! This is one of the best MCT oils that I’ve found and so I’ve compromised and purchased it in a plastic bottle. You can always use coconut oil (which in and of itself is 30% MCT) if you prefer to completely avoid plastic :-)

Hi Elana, I love your website and all these amazing tips and recipes. I just clicked on sunflower lecithin and thought you might like to know about a product report. I pasted it below:
UPDATE: 1/6/2015 Please see photos. I re-ordered this product but what I received is not the same. Although the container states it is the same weight, it is about half the size of my original order. The serving size has remained the same at 3 Tablespoons (15grams) but the calories have increased from 75 to 110. Total Fat grams have increased from 8gm to 11gm. Sodium has increased from 5mg to 10mg!! It also no longer states the ingredients. First order stated the ingredients as Sunflower Lecithin. I am returning my second order and will NOT be ordering this again from this supplier. I am so very disappointed and changing my rating from 5 stars to 1.
Elana says
Suzie, thanks for reaching out about this! We contacted the company and also reordered so that we could look into the issues above. We measured the contents of the container and the weight is accurate as stated. The company said that they have had to change suppliers a couple of times now and that they are required to use the nutrition information that the supplier provides. We really appreciate you bringing all of this to our attention :-)
Lori says
Hello, I also clicked on the lecithin link and in the reviews someone commented, “The packing slip indicated that an ingredient on this product will cause cancer, per proposition 65 in CA.” They do not state what the ingredient is – could it be hexane used as a solvent to separate the fats? I hesitate to order if such a warning is in the container. Thank you.
Elana says
Lori, thanks for your comment and for checking in on this. We spoke with the company and they told us that this may be because of a naturally occurring substance in the product, not something that is added :-)
TJ says
Coffee is going to have to carry that warning in CA now. Kind of a boy who cried wolf type of thing.
Laurie says
I made this today with frozen blueberries and lemon juice. I didn’t have lecithin, and I substituted coconut oil for mct oil. It was delicious! I am looking forward to trying your other keto smoothie recipes (chocolate is next!).
Elana says
Laurie, thanks for letting me know this was delicious!
Deb says
Why did you choose the “Now” brand of egg white protein? Have you checked out “Naked egg”?
Elana says
Deb, I link to that brand because it is tasty and affordable :-)
Lesley says
I just made this as I am working on adapting to keto. The kick of lime in it is so amazing! It feels like I am drinking some sort of decadent treat! I love that it makes leftovers so I can have some tomorrow!
Elana says
Lesley, thanks for your comment and for letting me know this smoothie tastes like an amazing and decadent treat!
Kirsten Evans says
Very solid recipe. I’ve made it 3 times in less than a week. I used lemons instead of limes, and used about 3 slices with peels removed. I’ve yet to find a keto recipe of yours I don’t like, and I’ve made most of them. Thank you!
Kirsten Evans says
I did use whey protein powder in place of egg white powder too.
Elana says
Thanks Kirsten!
Elana says
Kirsten, thanks so much for letting me know you enjoyed this recipe and my other keto recipes!
Gail Harrigan says
Wow! Just made this with organic frozen mixed berries and almond milk. The lime juice really adds a nice kick and could it be that the lecithin holds the smoothie together better? Once again, Elana, your recipes make my whole day brighter. Thanks!
Elana says
Gail, yes! Lecithin is an emulsifier. So glad that this smoothie was a wow :-)
