Orange Cake Recipe
This easy orange cake recipe is the perfect dessert for holidays such as:
But we love it so much we make this cake all year long! My holiday guests rave about this healthy gluten free recipe.
Orange Cake
If you’ve never had orange cake you’re in for a treat.
I first came upon an orange almond cake recipe in the 1990s in one of Claudia Roden’s cookbooks, The Book of Jewish Food.
Roden is a British cookbook author, food scholar, and cultural anthropologist. She is also one of my heroes.
According to Roden, orange almond cake is a traditional Sephardic recipe commonly served at Passover.
Gluten Free Passover Dessert Recipes
This Gluten Free Orange Almond Flour Cake is perfect for Passover because it does not contain chametz.
As an aside, all of my dessert recipes are Kosher for Passover since they are free of chametz!
Whole Orange Cake Recipe
It seems weird to make a cake with whole oranges.
However, using the orange with its peel is what makes my orange cake with almond flour moist and totally unique.
Yes, as I mentioned, use the entire orange, including the peel! Make sure your oranges are fresh and sweet so the cake is fresh and flavorful.
Make Ahead Almond Flour Cake Recipes
You can make this cake recipe ahead of time, that’s what I do when we’re entertaining.
If I’m having people over for Shabbat dinner, I make the cake Wednesday, let it cool on the counter overnight, then wrap it and store it in the fridge until Friday.
Cuisinart Food Processor
You know I love getting into the kitchen to test recipes for you and enjoy sharing my favorite kitchen tools, including this food processor.
This one is not only affordable, it gets the job done quickly and easily.
Gluten Free Dairy Free Desserts
Using a good food processor blends this cake batter to perfection, making it incredibly smooth.
Still, it’s amazing this cake is so rich and melt in your mouth delicious, given the lack of butter and flour. This is a fantastic gluten free, dairy free dessert.
Chocolate Orange Cake
I’ve always wanted to smother this orange cake in my Chocolate Dairy Free Frosting recipe.
As a kid, I loved chocolate-covered orange peel, and couldn’t get enough of that flavor combo. I haven’t tried it here yet, but I imagine it would be incredible.
Almond Flour Lemon Cake
This paleo cake recipe would be incredible with lemons, though many adjustments would need to be made since lemons are smaller than oranges, not as sweet, and far more bitter.
I tested this orange cake recipe a couple of dozen times to perfect it so I’m not sure how substitutions would work in order to create a recipe for lemon cake.
I wish I had a crystal ball, it would make the process so much easier! If you do experiment with lemons leave a comment and let us know if it works.
Gluten Free Desserts
Thankfully, you really don’t need to experiment with anything, given that I have hundreds of easy recipes for gluten free desserts here on the website and in my three cookbooks!

Nancy says
This morning I made this orange cake with butter flavored Keto syrup.
I made the keto syrup last nite.
I did two cakes, exactly the same. Cook time was 34 minutes at 365degrees, middle oven rack.
It is absolutely delicious.
Elana says
Nancy, thanks for your comment! I was thinking about you this weekend and feeling thankful to have you as a reader! I hope you had a fabulous Thanksgiving. And thanks for letting me know this cake is absolutely delicious :-)
Ann Katz says
This is my favorite cake; I eat a small slice every day, and I give it as gifts with a small amount of sifted powdered sugar on top. It makes the cakes look so fancy. Thank you, Elana, your recipes are my favorite.
Elana says
Ann, I love that I get to be part of your day via this cake!!!
Claudia says
I’d like to double the recipe and bake it in a bundt pan. Any tips from someone who’s done it??? Thanks so much! ☺️
Elana says
Claudia, I think someone mentioned in the comments that they had tried that :-)
Mary says
I had to improvise as I did not have enough almond flour or honey
I also doubled the recipe and used a bundt pan
2 – 8 oz oranges
1 cup almond flour
3 cups bob mills paleo flour
1/2 cup honey
1 cup cane sugar
8 eggs
1 tsp sea salt
2 tsps baking soda
I baked according to the original post
it turned out great!
PS- boiling the oranges was a first for me and my house smelled fantastic!
Elana says
Thanks Mary!
Lilly says
I did this with some oranges that were a little larger than recommended, it baked just fine, but it had a bitter aftertaste. I found I could counteract the bitterness with some Hershey’s chocolate syrup on top.
Elana says
Lilly, the bitterness may have come from using a larger amount of oranges than called for in the recipe. Glad you still found this tasty and enjoyed it :-)
Claudia says
I had the same experience. Yhe bitterness faded after a day, and even more so after 2 days. What was left was an intense orange flavor. I will definitely do it this way again!
Jan says
Elana, this looks so good. We have almond allergies at our house. Do you know what adjustments would need to be made to substitute coconut flour for the almond?
Elana says
Jan, I haven’t tried that so not sure. For more on that go here:

Enjoy!

Chrissy Drummond says
Hi Elana,
I used coconut flour yesterday for this recipe and it worked well, I would recommend.
Chrissy
Elana says
Chrissy, thanks! Just a note to other readers, coconut flour and almond flour cannot be used cup for cup in recipes.
Heather says
Hi Chrissy, how much coconut flour did you use in place of the almond?
Kim Quinn says
I have both a funeral and a delayed graduation party to attend tomorrow. 2 questions, please.
1. To save time, as I am making 70 chicken salad sandwiches from scratch also, can I double the recipe, simmer 4 oranges and pulse in the eggs amndnd honey and refridgerated over night? Add almond flour, baking soda and salt in the morning?
2. Can I put a double batter in a 9×13 pan? Same cook time?
Heeeelp and Thank you!!!
Elana says
Kim, thanks for your comment and wow, what a day you will be having. I haven’t tried making this in 2 steps so not sure about that. I think it’s a worthy experiment! I also haven’t tried doubling this recipe and would need to test it to see if that would work, I’m guessing it may not without substantial adjustments. I hope your day is as smooth as possible and sending my condolences and best wishes to you.
Janys says
Love your recipes but you use too much almond flour which amounts to a great amount of almonds which I don’t believe is healthy for the gut!
Elana says
Janys, thanks for your comment! Here’s a link to my recipes that don’t use almond flour for you:

Have a fantastic day!

Jules says
I’m in the UK and would love to bake this cake but we don’t use measuring cups here. Would you be able to tell me what the weight conversions are in either grams or ounces please
Elana says
Jules, I haven’t tried that so not sure :-)
Rebecca says
Hi Jules, I just use a coffee mug as my cup measure. As long as you use the same cup/mug for the recipe it will work :) and Thank You Elana for the most amazing recipes and sharing them :)
Elana says
Rebecca, you’re welcome!
