When I think of spring, I think of spring cleaning which makes me think of detoxing.
This brings green juice to mind, and I have the perfect go-to green drink for you.
Cilantro Detox Juice Recipe
This Cilantro Detox Juice is packed with incredible phytonutrients that have healing properties.
What is Cilantro Good For?
Cilantro chelates heavy metals from the body, which is important since I have the MTHFR genetic mutation which can impair detoxification.
Is Cilantro Good for Cleansing?
Since cilantro is so great for cleansing, I drank a quart of this green juice every day when I was diagnosed with heavy metal toxicity in 2004.
Rather than doing medical chelation, which I thought would be too hard on my body, my doctor suggested that I eat A LOT of cilantro.

What is Detox Juice Good For?
In addition to helping detox heavy metals, cilantro also helps build healthy skin and hair and reduces the risk of heart disease and diabetes.
Further, it contains antimicrobial properties, which is likely why it’s been widely used in cooking for cultures in warmer climates, prior to the development of refrigeration.
Cilantro Health Benefits
The health benefits of cilantro are numerous. This superfood contains compounds that reduce the risk of:
- Heart Disease
- Obesity
- Diabetes
Further, cilantro contains a substance called dodecenal. This antimicrobial compound is thought to protect the body against infections caused by food spoilage.
Healthy Green Detox Juice Recipe
For this healthy juice recipe, I use all of the cilantro, both leaves, and stems.
I also do this for cooking because it stretches my food dollars, and reduces prep work and food waste.
The stems of cilantro taste every bit as good as the leaves!
Is Cilantro Parsley?
I’m often asked if cilantro and parsley are the same thing. To this, I must reply with a resounding NO.
While both are very bright leafy greens that grow on long, thin stems, to me they taste nothing alike.
Many people confuse flat-leaf parsley with cilantro because they look so similar. Parsley is more of a Mediterranean herb while cilantro is often used in Mexican, Thai, and Indian food.
Both parsley and cilantro have numerous health benefits. Herbs in general are packed with micronutrients and healthy anti-inflammatory compounds.
Is Juicing Good for You?
When it comes to juicing some people worry about losing the fiber.
If that concerns you, blend your veggies in a high-speed blender such as a vitamix or blendtec.
I haven’t tried that, so I’m not sure if it will taste as good as my Cilantro Detox Juice.
I get plenty of fiber since I eat many servings of vegetables each day. For me, juicing is like taking a supplement.
Green Juice Detox Recipe
While juice is not a whole food, that doesn’t mean it isn’t extremely healthy.
Pushing superfoods through the juicer gives me extra micronutrients that my digestive system would not have space for.
Health Benefits of Juicing
Because our soil is depleted, even organic food has diminished nutritional value.
Juicing is my insurance, it may not be for everyone, but it’s perfect for me.
The Best Juicer
You’ll notice I reference my Breville Juicer not only in this recipe but quite often on the site. I find this is one of the best bang for your buck juicers.
Better yet? I’ve had mine for ten years now with no issues.
Easy Juicing Recipe
When I make my Cilantro Detox Juice I leave the skin on the produce.
When I spoke to the company (Breville) they advised me not to push unpeeled citrus through it as this may decrease the lifespan of the juicer.
Still, I leave the skins on, as I want all of the bioflavonoids found in the citrus skin.
Green Juice Recipes for Detoxing
As you can see, I love juicing and I adore my healing Cilantro Detox Juice! If you’re looking for more healthy green juice recipes try these too.

My Mojito Green Juice is a total winner. Mint, parsley, lime, ginger, cucumbers, and apple come together in this infusion for the ultimate refreshment.

Simple Green Juice
As the name suggests, my Simple Green Juice is just that, simple.
With only three healthy ingredients –parsley, cucumbers, and lemon you’ll be surprised by how flavorful it is!
Green Lemonade
My Green Lemonade contains similar ingredients to the above recipes, however, this one is supercharged with kale. Anytime I can sneak kale into my diet I’m in!

Samantha Scurto says
Hey there, so this is my first time juicing and my juicer made more of a chunky smoothie consistency. Do you have any suggestions on how to make it more drinkable?
Elana says
Samantha, it sounds like your juicer is not working properly. Feel free to use a strainer to remove the chunks :-)
Vannessal Powell says
I put mine in a blender added bottle water and an apple. Drink it down with a straw??
Elana says
Thanks Vanessa!

“…When it comes to juicing some people worry about losing the fiber..” I find this so infuriating when people comment on this about my juice. There is a thing called soluble fibre! it’s brilliant for people like me who cannot digest insoluble fibre. Anyone worried about lack of fibre should try juicing for a few days and then report back. Seriously your gut will not miss insoluble fibre!
Elana says
Thanks Eliza :-)
monika says
Elana, I know there is no fruit in here, but it’s still sugar…
Would you consider this a KETO juice?
Thanks!

Elana says
Hi Monika, thanks for your comment! This is not a keto recipe. Here is a link to all of my Keto Diet Recipes for you:

Thx Elana – I love reading your MS posts – so helpful! I have RRMS and have just started taking a Lyme protocol. Have you ever looked into or completed any Lyme treatments?
Elana says
You’re welcome Andrea! Yes, I wrote about Lyme here:

Thanks Elana. Your recipe sounds like a great spicy alternative to my current heavy metal detox smoothie I make using a Nutribullet. I use a cup to 1.25 cups of cilantro, a cup of frozen wild blueberries, a teaspoon each of spirulina and barley grass juice powder, atlantic dulse, about half of a medium banana, water and coconut water. This recipe tastes good without tasting overly sweet.
The Breville juicer is an excellent choice and I plan to get one once my decade old Omega 803 juicer kicks the bucket.
Elana says
You’re welcome Veronica!

Hope you are not drinking all of this cilantro detoxing drinks when you have mercury, AMALGAM, fillings in your mouth. You will push mercury to the brain. Effects to body very toxic.
Elana says
Patti, thanks for your comment! For more information on mercury fillings please go here:

Natasha says
I make mine with a nutribullet too but I find that lime juice and a few chunks of pineapple are a great combination. I also add Chlorella and a Greens powder.
Elana says
Thanks Natasha!
Klara Petelei says
Hi Elana, thank you for your informative posts. They educate and motivate too. I live in Europe and we don’t have cilantro, just coriander seeds. Do you know if the seeds can detoxify heavy metals as well? During my life I worked about 10 years in an industrial environment with exposure to many chemicals including metals. It would be helpful to clear that as much as possible. Thank you for your answer. Kin regards, Klara
Elana says
Klara, thanks for your comment! I would recommend going to an Asian market to find cilantro. It may be called coriander in Europe, but it will be a leafy green, not a seed :-)
Gina says
Grow the coriander seeds into Cilantro.
Lisa says
I was diagnosed with mercury poisoning. The Detox green juice sounds perfect for me however I heard that you need to use Chlorella along with the Cilantro because it aids in ridding the mercury once it binds to the cilantro. Have you heard this? My question is how much Chlorella and do you think it could be added to the Detox cilantro Green juice?
Thank you.
Elana says
Lisa, I had mercury toxicity and used this green juice and chlorella to chelate the heavy metals out of me. They work very well together. How much you take would depend on your mercury levels and would be best to discuss with a functional medicine practitioner :-)
Rita says
Sorry to intrude, I have a question, when you were diagnosed with mercury poison , did the doctor ask about if you have ( metal tooth filling) ? If so, did he recommend you to remove the filling and replace it with ceramic or another type of filling without any heavy metals in it?
Jeffrey Gradwell says
Hi there, About How long can I expect toxic level’s in my body to reach a level thats low enough for healing to begin, in terms of months???regards from South Africa, anybody running the Comrades marathon?, See you on the 4th of June, blessing all my christian American bro’s & Sisters?
Elana says
Hi Jeffrey, thanks for your comment. That would really depend upon how high your heavy metals are to start. I would recommend getting those levels tested by a functional medicine practitioner in your area. Best of luck in the marathon :-)
Patty says
May I please ask, do you have any amalgam fillings?
I was wondering whether it is safe to drink juiced cilantro if one does have amalgam fillings?
Elana says
Patty, I had them removed in 2004 by a functional medicine dentist. For more on that please go here:
https://elanaspantry.com/new-approaches-to-neurological-conditions/
I haven’t tried drinking this when I did have mercury fillings so not sure if that is at all safe.
