These Girl Scout cookies are called Peanut Butter Patties or Tagalongs, and guess what? I’ve made them gluten-free and Paleo. Now you can enjoy more gluten-free, Paleo Girl Scout Cookies. No need to give in to cravings for the regular (sugar-filled, gluten-filled) Girl Scout Cookies which are everywhere this time of year.
When I was a girl I was in a troupe called the Blue Birds. It was very similar to the Girl Scouts, except we sold Blue Bird candy instead of Girl Scout cookies. I had great fun going door-to-door selling candy to our neighbors. This was good preparation for the canvassing I later did for NYPIRG after I graduated from Columbia.

These peanut-free, dairy-free, vegetarian Tagalong cookies are best stored in the refrigerator or freezer –your choice will depend on the level of crunch that you like in your cookie.
My previous two Girl Scout Cookie recipes are based on recipes from Tammy Credicott’s book Paleo Indulgences, however, these Tagalongs are my own version of the regular Tagalong Girl Scout Cookie –they’re a simple gluten-free, grain-free, dairy-free almond flour cookie with some sunflower seed butter and dark chocolate. Thanks, though, do go to Tammy for getting me on a Girl Scout cookie roll!

This recipe is delicious and wonderful! My husband loves peanut butter which I used instead of Sunbutter. I can also see a lot of uses for the cookie on the bottom and I might try making a bar cookie out of the recipe when I’m in a hurry. Yes, thanks for the Girl Scout Cookies and all your other recipes too. They have been a huge help to me over the years!

To the uninitiated – could someone please explain what vegan shortening and sunbutter is and where to buy it in Australia?! Thank you!

Sunbutter is a nut butter made from sunflower seeds, which you could make yourself. I’ve heard of people using coconut oil in place of the vegan shortening, which you could try. Good luck!
Molly says
Yes, I also wouldn’t go looking for vegan shortening. It’s a processed product rather than a whole food. I’d substitute coconut oil. It’s super good for you. For the sunbutter, you could make it, but it would be simpler to just substitute a different nut butter that is available and that you enjoy (peanut butter or almond butter).

I would love to see Lemonades! Lemon Desserts are my absolute favorite. I couldn’t imagine a better paleo treat than one that takes advantage of the tangy and tart deliciousness of lemon.

These look amazing and gluten-free! Peanut butter is my absolute fave (a feeling I share with MANY I’m sure). Thank you yet again!

How about a Texas Sheet Cake?

I made these tonight and although there were a lot of steps these turned out incredible!!! What a great recipe! I will definitely be making these again.

I noticed you are using sunbutter instead of peanut butter. Do the cookies taste like peanut butter is in them??
Maria says
Yes, Sunbutter does taste like peanut butter. We use it in our house because I have a son with a peanut allergy. I’ve used Sunbutter (and other brands of sunflower seed butter) in recipes that call for peanut butter and people are surprised to learn that it isn’t actually a peanut butter treat.

I don’t think this recipe meets the definition of the “contemporary” Paleo diet. How do you define your Paleo diet?
DrD says
I agree with you and posted my concerns
DrD says
Foods Not Allowed on a Paleo Diet: Added Sugars
The practice of refining the sugar crystals from sugar cane of sugar beets has wrought havoc on the insulin/blood sugar regulation mechanisms of humans ever since it’s invention. The Paleo diet excludes all added sugars, including table sugar, brown sugar, agave nectar, honey, high fructose corn syrup, maple syrup, etc.
So by definition, MANY if not most of Elanas dessert recipes are NOT Paleo and should not be named so.
Melissa says
Raw honey is an unprocessed, whole food, found in nature that has been consumed by primitive people throughout history. You don’t get more paleo than that. Cavemen were more likely to eat honey than many of the modern vegetables we consider paleo. Despite what the ‘rules’ are, real paleo people would have taken advantage of a sweet honey find. Raw honey also has many health benefits, it’s not just an ‘added sweetener’.
