Lately I have received many requests for a gluten free Rosh Hashanah menu. People are asking what I will serve for this celebration of the Jewish New Year and so I am posting my dinner plans more than a week ahead of the actual holiday. You people really know how to get me organized!
I make a habit of serving rich, seasonal and of course, gluten free fare at all of my family’s festive celebrations; below is a list of dishes that we will be feasting upon on erev Rosh Hashanah, Monday, September 29th.
Apples Dipped in Honey
Tossed Green Salad
Rosemary Apple Chicken
Spinach Cake
Stuffed Mushrooms
Cranberry Pumpkin Upside Down Cake
Honey Cake
We begin our Rosh Hashanah meal with a prayer and apples dipped in honey, to symbolize a sweet start to the new year. According to Wikipedia, “various other foods with a symbolic meaning may be served, depending on local minhag (custom); the use of apples and honey is a late medieval Ashkenazi addition, though it is now almost universally accepted.”
Another traditional food eaten during this holiday is honey cake (lekach), and several of you have requested a recipe for this delicious dessert. Please stay tuned, I will try to have one ready for you before the holiday and will then link it back to this post for your convenience.
In the meantime, happy planning for your festivities!

Elana, could you please create more recipes that do not include eggs or milk? It look like i am intolerant to those things! :( It is a tough transition, and I am already using some of the recipes from your cook book (like your dairy-free choc. chip cookies), but I would LOVE if you could create some kind of egg free cake or something of that sort. Thank you!!! I LOVE your site! You’re amazing!

Nancy -Thanks for the challah link! Shanah Tova.
Morgan -I haven’t played around with natural food coloring for some time. Several years ago, I used to boil down the steaming water from beets and make a nice pink home made food coloring. If you find something else that you can recommend, please let us know.

I truly want to thank you for ALL your effort and support! It has made our family’s transition to GF smoother!!! I wanted to ask you what you think about natural food coloring (store bought or home made).
I wanted to add some color to your white frosting for my son’s birthday cake. Have you used any?

Here’s a link to a list of gluten-free challah recipes (along with some places that will ship ready-made gluten-free challahs). Happy holiday!

Debbie,
I’m not a big bread eater and haven’t yet developed a challah recipe, sorry I can’t be of more help.
You may want to post your question in the forums to see if anyone has a gluten free challah recipe.

What, no challah?!?
I’m still looking for a recipe I can use for a round challah. Do you have one?
