For the most part, I’m a tomboy. I wear gym clothes just about everyday. As I sit here writing this, I’m wearing a pair of ratty old sweat pants and my husband’s frayed t-shirt. I don’t like to wear make up to the grocery store, or anyplace else for that matter.
There is one exception though, where I do go girlie every now and then. Lip gloss. Maybe it’s because it’s moisturizing in the deathly dry climate in which I live, or it might be that I crave a quick splash of color.
I read somewhere a while back that the average woman “eats” 8 pounds of lipstick/lip gloss in her life. If such a product contains gluten, and that woman (like me) has celiac disease, that’s a lot of gluten to ingest in one’s lifetime, especially, if one is working diligently to eat strictly gluten free food. But we didn’t know that lipstick was a “food” did we? Well now we do.
In my research I came up with various results for gluten free lipsticks. I contacted numerous companies; here’s what I found:
1. The first category could conclusively vouch that each and every lip product in their lines were 100% gluten free. Such companies include:
- Gabriel Cosmetics (found at most Whole Foods)
- Mineral Fusion (Whole Foods)
- Nars (Sephora)
- Zuzu Luxe (found at a local chain called Pharmaca)
All of the above can be purchased online –just click the links.
2. The second group of cosmetic companies that I contacted regarding gluten free lipstick sent me long lists of ingredients for their lip products but did not have knowledge as to whether or not their lines were gluten free. These I stay away from.
3. The final group of companies were able to tell me that some of the lip products in their line were gluten free and that some contained gluten. I’ve decided not to bother with these products either. As much as I love a splash of color, this is just too much hassle.
As always, manufacturers can change the ingredients in their product compositions –so even with this list, be sure that whatever you purchase, whether food or make up, is gluten free!

Wow! I really had no idea how prevalent gluten is in cosmetics. And shampoos? What am I looking for?
Elana, I sure would appreciate seeing the list of companies you contacted in each category. I’d like to follow-up with some that are in my bathroom cabinet that you might not have contacted.
Thank you SO MUCH for this post!

http://www.redapplelipstick.com/ Just one more to look into. Online only, but appears to be a great company. I have yet to try them. Thank you for your post. I will be much more aware of this, for myself and certainly for my GF daughter who is just starting into some makeup.

Jennifer, I recently started using Red Apple and I love their products!

They go to most of the GF expos as well.
I have to say, I’ve rotated around a bunch of the brands since finding out I was gluten allergic/celiac.
Red Apple by far has been the best one I’ve used – they sucked me in with a good deal a couple months back and now I’m hooked LOL.

I have used Red Apple and like them

I am really glad you wrote this post. I just had a reaction that I assume has to do with using a brand of lip balm that I neglected to check before using. Lip products make me nervous and it is nice to know what companies are completely gluten free. Thank you.

I use a lot of Tropical Traditions skin care products. Their lip balm and lotions are not only gluten free, but completely natural (Like you could eat them!) Of course I also use their coconut oil for moisturizing too. Great company, and great products!

I absolutely agree with you on Tropical Traditions. I’ve loved everything I’ve purchased and use their products to make my own body balm for times when their moisturizer just isn’t enough for dry weather here.

I’m still trying to find a nice affordable natural lipstick/gloss that is both gluten-free AND palm/coconut-free (coconut products give me hives, as well as anything that comes off a palm tree – bananas, etc.)
I’ve pretty much given up on most make up and only use eyeliner, cocoa powder (eyeshadow/blush) and a little olive oil on my lips.

This is my favorite lip balm from Herbs of Grace, a mama run business. It has a hint of color and a nice feel. http://www.herbsofgrace.com/product_info.php?cPath=43&products_id=164

I have really come to love Silk Naturals over the years. Their products are each individually listed gluten-free (or not), making it so easy to navigate the product line. I haven’t come across any of their lip products that contain gluten, they are made of all natural, quality and often organic ingredients and have a stunning array of colors. No-I don’t work for the company, just adore them! I have found I also have to be very careful with hair products-an alarming number of them contain gluten and how often do I touch my hair and then possibly my mouth or simply have my hair blow in my mouth? Too much worry for me!

Hey thanks for the post. I was told that all smashbox brand make-up is gluten free. I love burts beeswax.

I recently looked in to their new Legendary line, and thought I saw gluten in the ingredients. I could be wrong, but you may want to double check!
