For the most part, I’m a tomboy. I wear gym clothes just about everyday. As I sit here writing this, I’m wearing a pair of ratty old sweat pants and my husband’s frayed t-shirt. I don’t like to wear make up to the grocery store, or anyplace else for that matter.
There is one exception though, where I do go girlie every now and then. Lip gloss. Maybe it’s because it’s moisturizing in the deathly dry climate in which I live, or it might be that I crave a quick splash of color.
I read somewhere a while back that the average woman “eats” 8 pounds of lipstick/lip gloss in her life. If such a product contains gluten, and that woman (like me) has celiac disease, that’s a lot of gluten to ingest in one’s lifetime, especially, if one is working diligently to eat strictly gluten free food. But we didn’t know that lipstick was a “food” did we? Well now we do.
In my research I came up with various results for gluten free lipsticks. I contacted numerous companies; here’s what I found:
1. The first category could conclusively vouch that each and every lip product in their lines were 100% gluten free. Such companies include:
- Gabriel Cosmetics (found at most Whole Foods)
- Mineral Fusion (Whole Foods)
- Nars (Sephora)
- Zuzu Luxe (found at a local chain called Pharmaca)
All of the above can be purchased online –just click the links.
2. The second group of cosmetic companies that I contacted regarding gluten free lipstick sent me long lists of ingredients for their lip products but did not have knowledge as to whether or not their lines were gluten free. These I stay away from.
3. The final group of companies were able to tell me that some of the lip products in their line were gluten free and that some contained gluten. I’ve decided not to bother with these products either. As much as I love a splash of color, this is just too much hassle.
As always, manufacturers can change the ingredients in their product compositions –so even with this list, be sure that whatever you purchase, whether food or make up, is gluten free!

Oh, yeah. A mix of coconut oil and almond oil or walnut oil, sometimes with a little mint extract or something if I’m so inclined…
Yah bless. =)

I’d have to agree with that. The very idea of wearing all of that heavy greasy stuff just… O.o I just can’t do it. But the air is so dry where I live that a good chap stick is imperative. But finding one without all of the allergens, AND without lanolin? Wow…
I was making my own for the longest time. Haven’t needed it lately, since I’m in a climate that doesn’t dry me out as much. But would be nice to know, just in case. Being on the road, I sometimes need that quick fix.
Thanks for this.

I often use coconut oil! It is a food, a gf food, and so moisturizing! Zero yuck.

This is so timely, thank you! I’ve been GF for a couple years – and a huge fan of yours, of course. Just had tests done and though I’m very careful, my numbers are still high. I had no idea about the lipstick! And the shampoo, lotion, etc. I’m not big on makeup, thankfully…
Thank you, Elanaspantry, for this!

What helps me is the mantra, “whatever you put ON your body, you put IN your body”. Which ends up making me choose not to put things on my body which most people consider perfectly innocuous, but when it comes to allergies (or creepy chemicals) if I can’t eat it, I can’t wear it.

I hope that also includes DRYER SHEETS…(and any perfumed laundry product.)
They pollute the air, cause allergies, respiratory problems, alzheimer’s AND the carcinogens…umm excuse me – the anti-wrinkling/fragrance properites – are released with heat (your dryer – AND your body when you wear the clothes!).
Think of it like a smoking cessation or hormone patch; it works the same way: dryer sheet ingredients are released on your clothes and, when worn, make a beeline through your bloodstream….
Google it, and prove me wrong. I am on a mission to get these things destroyed. If I can get just one person to stop using them and pass this knowledge on to one more…..
I am extremely curious to see if dryer sheets contribute to our youth ADD & ADHD population!

I have always wanted to wear lipstick. However, whenever I tried over the years, my lips would be very itchy and even swell a little. I am all for the full lip look, but…
It was only years later that I found out shellfish shells were part of many lipsticks and I am very allergic to it.
I sure do love all your recipes and observations. I am always giving your book as a present to the adventurous souls who are trying to go gluten free. Thanks for all you do.

I’ve had the same reaction on the rare occasion that i’ve tried wearing lipstick and am also very allergic to shellfish. I had no idea that could be the cause – Thank you so much for your post!

Have you tried Bear Essentials? They claim to be completely mineral based and I love their products, but haven’t done the exhaustive research.
Irene says
sadly BE is not gluten free, they fall under ‘most of our products are except..”
Sherrie says
They are not gf. I used them for years but now can’t because of my allergy and the fact that their products are not certified gf.

I had to chuckle Elana. There is some poor woman out there that has to eat my share of lipstick/gloss because I could count the times I’ve worn lipstick/gloss on one hand ;>)
