For the most part, I’m a tomboy. I wear gym clothes just about everyday. As I sit here writing this, I’m wearing a pair of ratty old sweat pants and my husband’s frayed t-shirt. I don’t like to wear make up to the grocery store, or anyplace else for that matter.
There is one exception though, where I do go girlie every now and then. Lip gloss. Maybe it’s because it’s moisturizing in the deathly dry climate in which I live, or it might be that I crave a quick splash of color.
I read somewhere a while back that the average woman “eats” 8 pounds of lipstick/lip gloss in her life. If such a product contains gluten, and that woman (like me) has celiac disease, that’s a lot of gluten to ingest in one’s lifetime, especially, if one is working diligently to eat strictly gluten free food. But we didn’t know that lipstick was a “food” did we? Well now we do.
In my research I came up with various results for gluten free lipsticks. I contacted numerous companies; here’s what I found:
1. The first category could conclusively vouch that each and every lip product in their lines were 100% gluten free. Such companies include:
- Gabriel Cosmetics (found at most Whole Foods)
- Mineral Fusion (Whole Foods)
- Nars (Sephora)
- Zuzu Luxe (found at a local chain called Pharmaca)
All of the above can be purchased online –just click the links.
2. The second group of cosmetic companies that I contacted regarding gluten free lipstick sent me long lists of ingredients for their lip products but did not have knowledge as to whether or not their lines were gluten free. These I stay away from.
3. The final group of companies were able to tell me that some of the lip products in their line were gluten free and that some contained gluten. I’ve decided not to bother with these products either. As much as I love a splash of color, this is just too much hassle.
As always, manufacturers can change the ingredients in their product compositions –so even with this list, be sure that whatever you purchase, whether food or make up, is gluten free!

What about Gluten Free face lotion with or without SPF… Have you done any research on this?

Would it actually have “Gluten” written in the ingredients of the lipstick?

Carmine is made from insects, so it’s not vegan and it can trigger allergic reactions. One I’ve heard about is people with shellfish allergy. Apparently Carmine red can trigger it in some sensitive individuals.
One of my biggest beefs with cosmetics is PRICE! I can’t afford and/or prefer not to spend money that could be used for more important purposes on feeding my vanity. it goes against my spiritual beliefs and sustainable earth conscious life.
Doesn’t anybody else find it ridiculous to pay $40, $50, $60, even $100+ on one product?

I would like to add Red Apple Lipstick to your gluten free list. All of their products are certified gluten free, paraben free, vegan, 100% organic, and are not tested on animals. They carry a full line of lipsticks and lip glosses as well as eye shadows, powders, mineral makeups, and a whole bunch of other cool GF cosmetic stuff that is impossible to find retail.

Alima Pure is gluten free as well. I’ve had great luck with their products not affecting allergies or making me itch. It really is surprising the ingredients in some of the things we use.

I couldn’t help but notice you didn’t have Red Apple Lipstick on your list! They have lipsticks, lipglosses and eyeshadows that are all gluten, paraben, lead, soy, and allergen free. Plus they are vegan! I currently own their lipstick in Red! Lipgloss in Metropolis and eyeshadow palette in Earth Luck. They have new stuff being released tomorrow too! Check them out! If you sign up to get their emails they have coupon codes and special promotions. Also, on their facebook page they have fun contests often. They really interact with us consumers which I think is fab!

This may seem like a “fluff” post but it’s important because personal products get overlooked.
Mineral Fusion works really well for me and I’ve used several products successfully for a long while.
A few years ago I put a beautiful Gabriel lipstick down because wheat germ was listed in the ingredients – I’m looking forward to checking them out at Whole Foods soon.
I also avoid artificial colors (like FDC approved food dyes) and artificial preservatives – things I don’t want in our food or on my face – so you’ve just doubled my options.

I HAVE SWITCHED TO MINERAL FUSION FOR ALL MY MAKEUP AND LOTIONS ECT. I AM CELIAC AND I ALSO HAVE ASTHMA. I LOVE MF BECAUSE NOT ONLY ARE THE GF BUT THEY ARE ALSO 100% VEGETARIAN, NO ANIMAL TESTING, AND FREE OF PARABENS, ARTIFICAL FRAGRANCES AND COLORS. ALSO LISTED ORGANIC.
FOR ME THAT COVERS ALOT OF MY ISSUES. THEIR PRODUCTS ARE REALLY NICE TO USE TOO. I HAVE LOVED EVERYTHING THAT I HAVE TRIED SO FAR. THEIR SHAMPOOS AND CONDITIONERS LEAVE YOUR HAIR REALLY NICE. I USE GABRIEL FOR LIPSTICK BUT I HAVE TROUBLE WITH THEM BREAKING RIGHT AFTER I GET THEM SO I AM THINKING OF TRYING MF FOR THAT TOO.
ELANA,
I THINK ITS GREAT THAT YOU PUT THIS INFO OUT THERE BECAUSE IT TOOK ME 2 YEARS TO FIND GF AND UNSCENTED PRODUCTS THAT WORK FOR ME.
THANK YOU FOR ALL YOUR WISDOM!!
