The Hanukkah meal is a special dinner for us during the winter holiday season. We look forward to it all year long. As soon as the gluten-free latkes hit the plate, they seem to disappear. Thankfully, now that the boys are older they do all of the latke frying!

I’m sharing our Paleo Hanukkah Menu so that you can enjoy this amazing holiday too. You don’t have to be Jewish to celebrate the Festival of Lights.

Healthy Hanukkah Recipes

Latkes with applesauce are my favorite part of the Hanukkah meal. My latkes are gluten-free, grain-free, paleo, and SCD. Homemade Apple Sauce is also a part of our family tradition. I began making apple sauce from scratch when the boys were infants, and now they frown upon store bought version.

I also serve roasted broccoli, one of their favorite everyday dishes, though you could replace it with asparagus or zucchini. Of course, I bake a chicken, which my husband loves. This comprises our traditional, yet healthy Hanukkah meal.

Your Hanukkah Traditions

  2. Happy Hanukkah!! My family is pretty picky and definitely prefer a traditional latke thought my husband has been known to scarf down several zucchini latkes when I make them. I’ve also done a sweetened sweet potato which was pretty yummy.

  4. Elana, would you mind doing a post on ideas for healthy school lunches? I have three boys, two are in high school. I find it very challenging to find make-ahead ideas for food that they can grab and go that is simple and healthy. What do your boys eat for their school lunches?

    Love your latest cookbook! The recipes I’ve tried so far have been very, very good! I love the fact that I have majority of the ingredients on hand or they are easy to get if I don’t.

  5. I like to do a whole smorgasbord of Latkes. I use Elana’s butternut squash latkes, sweet potato latkes from Reluctant Veggie website, zucchini latkes with chickpea flour and cumin in them from go dairy free website, sometimes I do Elana’s carrot and scallion latkes, potato and apple latkes from the GOOP website, another zucchini one with dill and oregano from cook it allergy free website and an ordinary zucchini one with no special seasonings that I got from a friend. I make all the latkes gluten-free, dairy free using quinoa or sorghum flours (except the one with chick pea flour). If I have to cut back on the onions for some friends and family then I use organic granulated onion/onion powder instead. I also have been making them egg-free using ground flax seed with hot water as the egg substitute. I did a giant batch of ordinary zucchini latkes one year with flax instead of eggs for my daughter’s class and all the kids gobbled them up. For toppings we generally use applesauce or sometimes just eat them as is without any topping. The apple-potato one from GOOP is really nice with smoked salmon (lox) and even some cream cheese (in our house that would be goat cream cheese).
