Cinnamon Coffee Cake

Homemade Cinnamon Coffee Cake is one of my favorite comfort foods. Growing up my mother used to buy a tasty frozen coffee cake at the grocery store as a special treat.

How to Make Homemade Coffee Cake

My healthy homemade coffee cake is made with only six ingredients –almond flour, salt, baking soda, coconut oil, honey, and eggs. This easy coffee cake recipe can be thrown together in no time flat. The topping has three additional ingredients –coconut sugar, cinnamon, and sliced almonds.

Almond Flour Coffee Cake

Like the one Mom used to buy, this cake is moist and has a sweet cinnamon topping. It's perfect with a cup of my Dandelion Coffee on a lazy weekend morning.

Kosher for Passover Coffee Cake

This low-carb Cinnamon Coffee Cake is Kosher for Passover. Like all of my recipes, it does not contain any chametz.

The Gluten-Free Almond Flour Cookbook

This Cinnamon Coffee Cake recipe is adapted from one on page 24 of my first book, The Gluten-Free Almond Flour Cookbook, published in 2009. Both coffee cake recipes are dairy-free. All of the recipes in that cookbook are 100% dairy-free!

Where's The Coffee?

American coffee cake is a tender cake with rich topping baked into it. This type of coffee cake rarely contains coffee. It is called coffee cake because it is typically served at breakfast, or in the afternoon, along with tea and coffee. We often serve Cinnamon Coffee Cake for dessert after a festive meal.

Are you Dairy-Free?

Will you eat dairy? Do you consider dairy to be part of the paleo diet? Leave a comment and let me know!

This post is an oldie but goodie from the archives. I first shared this recipe in March 2015.

  1. My daughter passed your recipe on to me and I must say it is definitely superior to other recipes I’ve tried in the past! I substituted mild olive oil for the coconut oil but it still worked a treat and tasted delicious! This cake will be one of our regular treats for sure!

  2. Wonderful cake! I did have the amount of maple syrup instead of honey! Just used water to make the 1/2cup, for less sweet.. And used ground pecans in stead of almond slices cause it’s what I had on hand.. Amazing!

  3. Dear Elana,
This cake was another wonderful recipe from you! I just started the SCD diet 2 weeks ago for IBD/Diverticulits. Pleased to say I am getting some relief! Without these wonderful treats from time to time it would be much more difficult. I made only a minor change because at this early stage I don’t want to eat whole nuts and I didn’t want to use coconut sugar (not sure if it’s legal). I made topping with just coconut oil, cinnamon and honey and swirled it into the cake….Delicious!!
Thank you so much for all you do and your hard work! Sending lots of love your way:)

    • Lucie, thanks for letting me know this cake is another wonderful recipe, so glad to hear you enjoyed it. Also wonderful to hear you are getting relief from SCD, it’s such a great plan and the late founder was a friend and mentor of mine. Sending you big hugs and lots of love :-)

  4. I made this for the second week in a row! It is divine and so simple to whip up! Thank you for creating and sharing this wonderful recipe!

  5. I made this last night and the only change I made was I used pure Maple Syrup instead of honey. Only because I didn’t have any honey on hand. Let me say, this is the best coffee cake recipe ever!! So moist and scrumptious. I served it to someone who is a non believer in Paleo anything. He was even impressed.

I have been Paleo since November of ’09 due to Lyme disease. Switching to Paleo was life changing for me. I would like to dable in Keto soon.

I have been following you silently since then. I would be remiss without saying thank you Elana and your family, for this blog post, sharing your very personal stories and ALL your delicious recipes! I will be forever grateful.

Sending love and health in this crazy time!

    • Anita, thanks for letting me know this is the best coffee cake recipe ever! So glad we are on this healing journey together, and very grateful for your sweet words :-)
