Pick some of the fresh basil that’s exploding in your garden for these zesty grain-free herb-flecked cookies.
I based this recipe (and photo) on one from Bon Appetit for Lemon-Lime Basil Shortbread Cookies. As you might expect, these are gluten-free, grain-free, sugar-free, dairy-free cookies. I used the same flavor profile as the Bon Appetit recipe, though decided not to make mine a shortbread cookie.
I’ve used coconut butter as the fat in this cookie recipe, which I learned to do from Jessica […]

If your garden is overflowing with fresh basil, I have the perfect recipe for you.
We planted more than ten little basil plants earlier this year and now my garden is overgrown with luscious green goodness. Since I have an entire bed of basil, I am of course, on the lookout for basil recipes.
When I looked back in my files, I found this one by Charlie Palmer. This recipe is not “inspired by” his, it is my version of his. If […]

A giant stinging nettles bush climbs up the side of the little red barn in my backyard. Although we’ve been in this house for 9 years, it’s taken me half that time to pay any mind to it.
The bush literally caught up with the boys first; they complained that it “bit” them whenever a 3-way collision of plant, child and a baseball occurred. Back in those days, with 2 little ones, and always in a rush to clean something, cook […]

My garden is flourishing and the basil plants are doing particularly well. Hence pesto, gluten free, dairy free, chopping board pesto. A couple of years ago, I saw a recipe in the local paper for a chopping board pesto, and then just the other day, my friend the fabulous Patrick reminded me about making pesto using this method.
My favorite way to eat this delicious green stuff is on a gluten free (of course) cracker. Enjoy!

1 cup basil, well […]

This super healthy Asparagus Basil Salad is a not just nutritious, it’s a treat for the palate. Trust me, it’s delectable, especially right now using wonderfully ripe vegetables at peak season. I found this recipe in Sunset Magazine. Actually, I didn’t find it, our family friend Mrs. Rose found it and made it for Mr. Rose’s 75th birthday, a fabulous little gathering that the boys and I attended when we were in Davis, California visiting my folks a couple of […]

My husband and I guzzled this summer squash salad last night at dinner. We had a massive feast of vegetables and salmon (the boys picked at dinner, though did just fine all in all). Along with the salad, we grilled the salmon, eggplant, red peppers and broccoli. Fresh fruit for dessert –cherries, apricots and strawberries.
It was a lot of fun. Making it even better was the fact that my husband and I went grocery shopping together in the afternoon (love […]

As I have mentioned here before, I am always looking for inspired ways to eat salmon. First priority, disguising the fishy flavor!
Well, lo and behold, last night as I sat on the couch making my way through the latest issue of Cook’s Illustrated (my dear friend Deb subscribed me as a gift last year), I found a section on cooking salmon. I was so inspired that I decided to test out the recipe for tonight’s dinner.
I do like Cook’s, however […]
